And the advantage of doing it yourself is that you will have such a greater choice of materials and fabrics to choose from. Go online and you will see that actually the number of pre-made products is fairly limited.
In fact manufacturers of canopy beds will sometimes try and push you towards a particular make of bedding that suits their models. And while that might not be a bad choice it's not very imaginative. Consider how many more options you will have if you go down to your local haberdashers and spend and hour or so looking through all their different fabrics. You will have the chance to create something truly unique for your bedroom that nobody else will have. With something like a canopy bed you want to be as original as possible.
